Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people around the world. It occurs when someone’s breathing is interrupted during sleep, leading to disrupted and fragmented sleep patterns.
There are several types of sleep apnea, but obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form. OSA occurs when the airway becomes blocked, usually by the soft tissue at the back of the throat.
This can cause the person to snore, gasp, or even wake up frequently throughout the night. Sleep apnea can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life, causing fatigue, headaches, mood changes, and difficulty concentrating.
It is also associated with a range of health problems, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Treatment options for sleep apnea include lifestyle changes such as weight loss and quitting smoking, as well as using a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine during sleep.
Left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious consequences, so it’s important to seek medical attention if you suspect you may have this condition.
