Grow tents are the easiest and most effective way to grow your own cannabis at home. However, the large range of sizes and models can overwhelm beginners that aren't sure how to choose the right grow tent. Keep reading to find out how to choose your cannabis grow tent, step by step.

Knowing how to choose the right grow tent is an incredibly important factor, as it can define the entire results obtained from an indoor cannabis grow. In order to do so, first you have to figure out the size of the tent you need and your budget. The last step is getting the necessary material and setting it up.

The Three Key Questions for Choosing the Right Grow Tent

In order to figure out which grow tent is right for you, you’ll need to answer three key questions.

How Much Space do you Have?

Measure the length, width and height of the room in which you plan on placing your grow tent; it’s incredibly important to keep in mind the amount of space you have to work with. For example, a 3x4m room that’s 2.5m can be partially used for a grow tent. The size of the tent will depend on the next question.

How Much Cannabis do you Want?

The size of your grow tent is directly related to the yield you’ll obtain. Obviously, the systems used, grower’s experience and strain can also influence this, but the size of the grow tent limit yield. Regardless of the amount of plants placed (few large plants or many small plants), the results will always be limited by the growing area.

In order to calculate the yield produced by a single grow tent, keep I mind that the standard yield obtained from a 7L flowerpot is around 40g.

To get a better idea, we’re going to go over how many 7L flowerpots that you can fit into a grow tent, depending on its size. Keep in mind that you have to leave enough space between your plants so that light can reach the lower branches.

Grow tents:

80 x 80 cm: 6 7L flowerpots
1 x 1 m: 9 flowerpots
1.2 x 1.2 m: 12 flowerpots
1.5 x 1.5 m: 16 flowerpots

What’s Your Budget?

The third thing you’ll need to keep in mind is how much you can spend on your grow tent. What usually happens is that more expensive products tend to be higher quality. However, at La Huerta Grow Shop we’ve chosen the best grow tents and those with the best price-quality ratio so that you can achieve the best results regardless of your budget.

How to Choose the Right Grow Tent

When it comes to analysing different grow tents, you’ll need to keep the following in mind:

Structure

It’s important that your grow tent have a sturdy, strong structure so it can hold up the lights, reflector, extractor fan, antiodor filter etc. The material and thickness of the metal bars in your grow tent will mark the first difference in the quality of your grow tent versus others; the thicker and sturdier they are, the more weight they’ll be able to hold.

Type of Reflective Material

The quality of the reflective materials on the inside of your grow tent is another thing to keep in mind. Thus, the reflection produced by the inside of the tent allows you to make the most of your grow lights.

The best grow tents are lines with fabric called Mylar, which is the commercial name of a polyester film called BoPET. This material is generally identified wit a number and the letter D or T.

The number and letter D mean “denier” which is a textile unit derived from the British system. The denier represents the mass in grams per 9000 meters of fibre. This indicates the strength and durability of the material and it allows you to compare them. The higher the Denier value (D), the stronger and more durable the fabric. For example, Mylar 210D is much stronger than 100D, and more expensive.

In some grow tents you can find Mylar with the letter T. This is an abbreviation for “thread count”, which measures the thickness or thinness of the materials.

Exterior Canvas

The quality of the exterior canvas and its opacity are two other factors that need to be taken into account. It must be sturdy and durable.

Zips

The quality of the zips on your grow tent don’t usually figure into growers’ calculations, but they are incredibly important as you’ll be opening and closing your grow tent quite often. If a zip breaks, you won’t be able to keep light out of the grow tent, which can be problematic as it can interfere with your plants’ light cycle. Plus, changing a broken zipper can be quite complicated and it’s usually better to just buy a new grow tent.
